www.alfoxtonpark.co.uk Once the home of Poet William Wordsworth, set in a hollow on the lower slopes of the Quantock Hills, and surrounded by 50 peaceful acres of it's own grounds, Alfoxton Park is an ideal place to unwind away from the normal hustle and bustle of everyday living.
There has been a dwelling at Alfoxton since Doomsday, but the most recorded time in the history of the house covers the period when William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy lived here, and during their residency were visited by many of the leading Literary figures of the day including their friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge who, living in the next village, spent much time with them sometimes staying here while they all roamed the beautiful Somerset countryside that so inspired some of their finest works including Wordsworth's Lyrical Ballads and Coleridge's now famous Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
The grounds include a Herb garden and an acre of Walled Kitchen Garden used in Wordsworth time and still in use today where we grow the vegetables and fruit we use in our cooking and the flowers we have all around the house.
To add to the enjoyment of your meals in the elegant Dining room we also make our own bread, soups, pates, puddings, jam and marmalade as well as making use of the local butter and cream.
There are many intersting places to visit in the area with it's pretty villages and fossil beaches and there is wonderful walking on the Quantock Hills with their magnificent views over the Bristol Chanel to the Welsh Coast.
Here you will find an abundance of wild life including Buzzards, Badgers and of course the Quantock Wild Red Deer, many of whom live in our grounds so you may even manage to photograph this magnificent creature in a natural habitat !
We also have a cottage in the grounds available for those who prefer the freedom of Self Catering while still making use of facilities such as the Restaurant and Bar.
Whether you wish a night away or to take advantage of one of the Short Breaks you will be most welcome to the relaxed friendly atmosphere of Alfoxton Park.
